We have a lot of accessories these days. On your computer, you may have a webcam attached to one USB port. You may have a keyboard in another, a wireless mouse in yet another, and perhaps an external hard drive or three. How on Earth are you going to have enough USB ports to handle all of this accessorizing?

Leave it up to the kindly folks at MeritLine to introduce a 10-port USB hub. This goes above and beyond the usual four or five-port USB hubs that are sold by just about everyone else, resulting in an elongated strip of USB functionality.

To make matters even more interesting, a power adapter is included in the package. Presumably, you could use this USB hub without the aid of a computer, plugging it directly into a wall outlet. The result would be a ten-port charging station for your BlackBerry, iPhone, GPS, or any number of other USB-powered devices.

Look for the 10-port USB hub on MeritLine for $25.99. The page says that there is free standard shipping, but that may be only to United States addresses.

Since I now have 200 podcasts under my belt, and with a new year coming up quick, I thought now would be the perfect time to introduce to you my new project. I want to help you with marketing.

Mitch Does Marketing!

Now, I will not create a new podcast or a blog. Instead I am going back to my roots, and diving back into producing another book – shades of the long forgotten Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting, which was the inspiration for this podcast four years ago.

So what can you expect? I’m not really sure just yet, other than I am looking to offer to the public at large tutorials, tips and advice on how to market your web site or online business, with as little cost to you as possible. Think of it as a good ol’ southern boy’s guide to marketing.

As soon as I have more information on the project, I’ll be sure to share it with you here. I hope it is as successful as my other projects are, and that most of all, you will get plenty of use out of it.

Like This Article? Listen to it and more like it on podcast #200 of the Web Hosting Show!

Web hosting and freelance writing are inherently non-denominational in nature, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t all choose to enjoy the holiday season together. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or nothing in particular, have yourself a wonderful rest of 2009.

Stephen Fung seems to be known best for his gastronomical exploits and it seems that the PR people know it. He received an early Christmas present from Asus. Instead of a motherboard, they gave him boxes and boxes of food.

Tyler Ingram has a great eye for photography, so it’s always great when he shares his pictures with us. Check out the fantastic shot of a bald eagle high up on a tree near Second Beach in Downtown Vancouver.

Zac Johnson is a successful Internet entrepreneur, so he knows more than anyone that time is the most valuable commodity. He tells us about his experience with a virtual assistant and how it has helped him streamline the busywork for his business.

Miss604, known to those closer to her as Rebecca Bollwitt, offers a great Christmas gift idea. Instead of giving a physical product that may be neglected, try giving the gift of theatre. Check out her post for a list of suggestions in and around the Vancouver area.

InvestorBlogger turns our attention to the financial side of things, discussing the trends in interest rates for the coming year. Will consumers bite back? Will the banks continue to protect their interests? Time will tell.

As I was making my way through the local mall for my holiday shopping a couple of weeks ago, I noticed something quite curious. I’m not really sure what to make of it.

I walked into the store, not looking for anything in particular, and then I saw a sign saying that I would be able to “save double the GST” on nearly all purchases, but the sale wasn’t until tomorrow. These signs were posted throughout the store on brightly colored paper. They were eye-catching for sure.

The good side of this is that customers could be encouraged to buy their gifts (and other products) at this store rather than at a competitor. The bad side is that these signs were effectively deterring customers from making their purchases today. They’re basically being told to come back tomorrow.

By not buying today, the customers could potentially go somewhere else. They may not come back tomorrow to take advantage of the sale, even if they make a mental note to do so. This pre-advertising could be counterproductive, since the customer is already in the store.

What do you think? Is this kind of in-store advertising good or bad in the long run?

The WordPress platform is incredibly versatile and can be used in many different ways. As a result, many of the blogs that you’ll find on the Internet are as different as the bloggers behind them. This is once again a matter of personal preference, so your opinion may vary. Do you think that you should have a brief “about” section on your blog’s front page?

You’ve surely seen this around the web. People post one or two sentences, usually next to their photo, telling readers who they are or what the blog is all about. This brief snippet can be placed in the sidebar, near the header, or even in the footer. Some bloggers choose to provide an additional link to a longer bio page, whereas others feel the brief snippet is good enough.

Regardless of the type of blog that you run, it is important to have an “about” section of some kind. This helps to introduce new readers to your blog, giving them a better idea of what to expect from you. Depending on the nature of your blog, this can be a personal bio or it can simply be “about” your blog. That’s up to you.

Personally, I think that having a separate “About” page is better than having a brief snippet in the sidebar. The full page gives you more space to provide a more comprehensive bio or explanation. Also, this saves some sidebar space that can be used for other purposes.

What do you think? Do you put a bio in your sidebar?

Today’s video shows a bit more of a silly side of WHIR tv.

From screw ups, to not knowing the camera was on to hilarious hijinx, the WHIR tv editing room floor had some pretty funny footage lying around. Instead of letting it go unnoticed, why not put it together in a 5 minute year end video? If you ask me, there’s no reason NOT to laugh at ourselves. It was a great year for WHIR tv and we look forward to another one full of old friends and new friends in the web hosting industry. Thanks for a great 2009. see you in 2010! Check out the video; maybe you’ve made it into this years blooper reel.

How does somebody turn a complaint into a feature? Anybody out there, who runs a web hosting company, can tell you they hear complaints about this, that and the other, every single day. When public opinion becomes SO strong, you might want to take the idea into consideration. You do not have to drastically change the way you do business though. If you are successful in one area of business, do not toss it aside to do something else that is more popular. I got a question submitted to me the other day from Matt, which touches on this very topic.

Here is what Matt had to say:

I run a free hosting site, and I’ve been at it for 4 years, and we’ve got very high rating, and uptime, and server speed, but I’ve still got this problem where everyone expects our service to be a sort of scam or not very good because of the price. If I start charging for it, I have to say goodbye to a lot of people who I’ve been helping for a long time, and if I don’t, it seems to me there’s always this group of people who wont choose it. I mean, if you want to pay money for your hosting, I’ll gladly take donations, and I have many people who do donate. If you have time, because I know you’re very busy, could you give me your honest opinion of our service and what we need to do to appeal more to small businesses and community organizations?

How can a free host become successful?

People are always skeptical when it comes to getting something for nothing, so as long as you give free services – you’ll always have somebody out there dismissing your claims of success because they think you’re a fraud. Thankfully, they might also think we never landed on the moon or one of the muppets assassinated JFK. The fact of the matter is there will always be somebody out there to complain.

My question is, do you have to pick one business plan, free hosting versus paid hosting, or can you have your cake and eat it too? I would suggest you keep your free hosting in place, it sounds successful, and you have happy customers – which is something many web hosts, free or not, can not claim. As a secondary service, roll out a paid hosting solution that offers a few perks over the free version. It could be in features, support or anything else you feel like you could offer a little more of to the people willing to pay for it. Then, once that is in place, start marketing your new paid hosting service to those customers you do have, and let them know that it is an option you are providing for them.

Some might bite at the proverbial worm you are tossing out there, and others may say no thanks. Past that point you can sell your new paid hosting option to the masses using the free service as a way to get your foot in the door, as far as seeing how great your hosting setup is. You might even sell it as you are so confident they will enjoy their hosting with you, you are willing to give it away for free.

Thanks to Matt for the question, and to check out his web site – or maybe send some more suggestions his way, be sure to check out ismywebsite.com.

So there seems to be some differing opinions here (yes, or no), but as reported by the Wall Street Journal, Citigroup seems to be in a bit of a pickle of late.

As indicated earlier today by MarketWatch, Citigroups’ stock took a bit of a tumble today in relation to the reports, seemingly, in this case, to drag down the whole segment of the market.
